If you are responsible for recovering your property yourself, then you can do some things in advance to be prepared.
WHAT IF I'M UNINSURED?
Not having insurance cover is a situation best avoided but we understand how difficult, expensive and sometimes infuriating finding insurance cover can be.
If you are uninsured and suffer a flood you will most likely be responsible for covering all the costs of flood damage.
Remember to keep records of the damage and take photos of your possessions and property all the same.
Having a plan is an important first step.
SUPPLIES
Local supplies of disinfectant, brushes, driers, generators, pumps, builders and tradesmen will run out fast. To get ahead of the game, make a full list of these emergency items and where to source them. It may be that they’re outside your local area so arrange for someone to collect them for you if you’re unable to travel.
CLEAR
When the floodwater subsides it’s vital to clear standing water as quickly as possible. Bricks and concrete floors soak up water relatively slowly, but conversely take months to dry out if they have been left standing in water for a long period (1 inch per month).
QUICKLY
Fast action at this stage will save months of drying time later.
HIRE
Dehumidifiers and fans can be hired from most good hire shops and will reduce the risk of health problems associated with damp.
COUNCILS
Your borough, district or county council may well be offering help and support.
LOCAL SUPPORT
Local voluntary services are also usually very proactive in offering assistance.
CHARITY
Also check whether there are any local charities or community groups offering help, services, goods or grants.
