National Flood Forum’s statement in response to the Public Accounts Committee report on the Government’s Flood Risk Strategy
The NFF has long called for more to be done to protect and support flooded people. This Public Accounts Committee report highlights some of the concerns we have raised, and we welcome the understanding that a vision for success must be defined, understood and quantified.
We have repeatedly raised concerns about rural and smaller communities who do not meet the current Government funding criteria. Many of these communities are left to repeatedly flood without any hope for the future. We are calling on the Government to address the funding criteria as a matter of urgency.
Government must adopt a strategy that embraces a truly multifaceted integrated approach to flood defence which adequately tackles the impacts of future flood risk. The current approach is too focused on personal resilience. While this undoubtedly has a place, it should only be one part of a bigger bolder Government vision for flood mitigation.
